Exciting News for Kailua-Kona!
The iconic Uncle Billy’s Kona Bay Hotel is undergoing a massive $30 million transformation and will reopen as the Hampton Inn Kailua-Kona Bay in Summer 2025. This beloved property, located in the heart of Kailua-Kona’s eight-block oceanfront tourist district, will soon offer the best of both worlds: modern amenities and the charm of old Hawaiian culture.
What’s New?
Sandy Shapery, a historic preservationist, is spearheading this renovation through his entity, 12th & A Hotel Partners. The updated hotel will feature:
- 123 modern rooms designed for both business and leisure travelers.
- A fitness center and free hot breakfast.
- A sparkling pool, a large outdoor common area with a firepit and bar, and a pavilion for local entertainment and cultural activities.
- The Island Bar and Grill by Trader Vic’s, serving local Island/Polynesian fare and the famous Mai Tais.
Sustainability and Preservation
The renovation will respect the property’s original 1960s Hawai’i vibe while incorporating sustainable features. For example, 340 tiki torches will use LED flicker lights instead of traditional kerosene.
Community and Tradition
A traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony was held on December 10, 2024, led by Kahu Danny and Anna Akaka, to honor the land and bless the property. Mayor Kimo Alameda praised the project for enhancing the visitor experience and preserving the essence of the local community.
Leadership and Vision
Shapery’s vision is supported by Summit Capital, who arranged the financing, and PEG Hospitality Group, who will manage the hotel. The architectural design is a collaborative effort between AM Turner Architects and Koa Design Group.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the grand opening in 2025!
